Holmes SWCD has a wealth of resources for teachers, students, and nonformal educators. We provide in-classroom and camp programs about soil, water, and other related subjects.

The SWCD also has several demonstration models. A groundwater flow model demonstrates how water and pollution moves underground. The Enviroscape is an excellent visual for nonpoint source pollution. These models can be demonstrated by SWCD personnel in your classroom.

In addition, we have the equipment needed for water quality monitoring, either by the using kick seine method to search for macroinvertebrates, or chemical testing. This is a great hands-on way to get students to understand the importance of clean water. The macroinvertebrates are ugly enough to keep students’ attention and make learning fun!

Student Opportunities

The Holmes SWCD board sponsors three scholarships for OFA Forestry Camp every year. Students must have completed the eighth grade to be eligible, and camp is the second week in June at Camp Muskingum. SWCDs sponsor the Ohio Envirothon, which is a great opportunity for high school students to work as a team and learn more about natural resources. The local contest takes place the first Wednesday in May.
